2002 RM250 Restoration! Here goes nothing!

So I’ve decided to start taking on some project bikes to pass some spare time and hopefully make some cash. Not easy cash, but gives me something to do! I’ve always fixed what I can on my bikes in the past, but never built them from the ground up.

I’ve purchased a 2007 CRF250 which I just plan to sell on at a profit after I spent a few hours today tidying it up. Apart from that I’ve bought two project bikes. I got a clean 1992 YZ250 which is sort’ve 80% there which is good, and a 2002 RM250.

The RM250 was dirt cheap so I didn’t even give it a good check over. It looks like it has a full 7 years worth of dirt everywhere and is a complete mess. I’ve had a good check over it today and it needs A LOT of work. The only down point is that I can now see that it has obviously threw a chain in the past, which means some muppet has tried to bodge the crankcase with rubbish welding and some filler. So it is a case of getting a second hand one, possibly off eBay!

I’ve got it down to a rolling chassis now. I’ve taken the head off and the cylinder looks fine. The clearance around the piston is fine, but it does look a bit rough. The spark plug has metled between the gap, so there is the reason it does not start! So I’ll be having the cylinder off over the next few days and see what I’m dealing with. Obviously I can’t test the gearbox until I have it running which is a bit risky I guess. Even with the purchase of a crankcase, I’ll still hopefully clear a profit and learn a lot in the process.

I’ll get some pictures up as soon as possible!

Check out my 1992 YZ250 post as well!
